“Milk frother included” is the most misleading phrase on any espresso machine listing, because it can mean five completely different things — from a plastic sleeve on a steam pipe to a fridge-ready carafe that pours cold foam. I got tired of decoding it one reader question at a time, so here’s the whole map: every current machine from the five brands I cover, what its milk system actually is, and what that means for your mornings. No prices, no sponsorships — just the facts that don’t change. And if you’re staring at a specific code like EP3341/50 and don’t know what it is, the model number decoder will translate it first. I keep this table updated as lineups shift; verified against US brand storefronts, last full pass August 2026.

Reading the table: the five milk systems

Panarello wand — a steam pipe wearing an air-injecting sleeve. Thick cappuccino foam with zero skill, no latte-art microfoam ever. The trade and the technique are in my frothing on a super-automatic guide.

Automatic carafe — the machine froths and pours (LatteGo, LatteCrema, Gaggia's carafes). Real one-touch drinks; the price is a weekly teardown. Philips' LatteGo cleans fastest of the family — two parts, no tubes.

Manual steam wand — you're the milk system. The only route to true microfoam, and a skill worth a fortnight of ugly foam.

Auto-frothing wand — a wand that steams for you at set temperature and texture (Breville's Touch line, DeLonghi's Auto LatteArt). Closer to real texture than a panarello, without the learning curve.

Milk pipe — Jura's signature: a tube pulls milk from any container. Elegant, one-touch, and the strictest cleaning schedule on this page.

The naming rules brands won't explain

A few patterns decode most of the confusion:

Gaggia: a Prestige or Milk suffix means automatic milk; the same name without it means a panarello. Velasca vs Velasca Prestige is the same machine with two different mornings.

Jura: milk always travels through a pipe from an external container — no wands, no panarellos anywhere in the lineup. And ENA 4, E4 and the new C3 are deliberately milk-free machines for black-coffee people.

Philips: the current lineup (Cafe Aromis, 5500, 3300, 2300, Baristina) is all LatteGo or nothing; the panarello survives only on the previous-generation 2200 Classic still sold at retail. If your model starts with EP22/EP32/EP44 — it's the previous generation, which I decoded in the Philips lineup guide.

DeLonghi: LatteCrema on the box means a carafe; Manual Frother means a panarello; and on the semi-auto side, only La Specialista Touch and Dedica Maestro Plus steam milk for you.

Take the 60-second quiz

A living page. This table grows in two directions: I add new machines as brands release them, and the "Our take" column fills in as I publish hands-on reviews and comparisons. If a machine you're researching still shows a dash there — check back, or take the quiz in the meantime; the recommendation logic already covers every milk system on this page. Frequently Asked Questions

Which automatic espresso machines have a milk frother?

Practically all of them — the real question is which kind. Entry DeLonghi and Gaggia models use a panarello wand, Philips' current lineup uses the LatteGo carafe, DeLonghi's LatteCrema models use a fridge-ready carafe, and Jura pulls milk through a pipe. The table above maps every current model to its system.

What's the difference between LatteGo and LatteCrema?

Both are one-touch carafes, different philosophies. LatteGo (Philips) is two pieces of plastic with no tubes — rinses in seconds, foam is good but simple. LatteCrema (DeLonghi) has adjustable foam density and, on higher models, cold foam — better drink range, more parts to wash weekly.

Can you make latte art with a panarello wand?

With the sleeve on — no; the air hole fixes bubble size above what latte art needs. Machines with a manual wand (Barista Express, Gaggia Classic, La Specialista) are the realistic route to art.

Which espresso machines have no milk system at all?

Jura builds them deliberately — ENA 4, E4 and the C3 are coffee-only by design. Philips' Baristina and Baristina Plus are compact espresso-only machines too. For a black-coffee household these skip the parts you'd never wash.
